The box of the LEGO Ideas Tree House 21318 set is a perfect representation of its contents. Upon opening, I found 19 numbered bags, 5 additional bags containing yellow and green leaf elements, and a 434-page thick instruction manual.

The attention to detail on the box’s cover ultimately reflects what one should expect when constructing this treehouse.

The bags are pre-sorted according to their role in building the main tree structure or the supporting base plates.

The instructions are sectioned into numbered bags, giving a stepwise construction process that minimizes confusion in assembling parts.

Numbered Bags And Build Process Overview

The Base

The Foundation

The foundation of the set is a grass-covered floor from which the tree has sprouted. The base’s structure primarily comprises large plates and Technic pieces for reinforcement, cleverly concealed.

It is elevated and detailed with a range of sloped pieces scattered along the edge, imparting a sense of irregularity. This approach mirrors several other sets featuring rocky terrains.

The construction of surprises awaited eager explorers. By skillfully manipulating plate levels, the designers have breathed life into the base, transforming it from a mere plate into a characterful platform showcasing variety and depth.

A narrow watercourse snakes its way across one side of the base, introducing a splash of contrasting color to the green.

To simulate the undulating effect of water, the designer has stacked two layers of plates: light blue plates at the bottom overlaid with transparent plates.

My initial preference was for tiles instead of plates for the upper transparent layer, but the studs on the plate create the illusion of moving water, reminiscent of a swiftly flowing stream.

The ground surrounding the tree house is adorned with a diverse array of flora, including flowers, leaves, and even mushrooms.

A quaint picnic table positioned at the tree house’s base hosts various objects, my favorite being a beautifully designed candlestick holder.

The picnic table, complete with seats, invites the family to relish a meal amid nature.

The introduction of the new wand part in the Harry Potter series sparked speculation about its potential applications.

This set is among a few in 2019 that innovatively employs this versatile part. Besides the picnic table, the tree house dwellers have a small fire pit for cooking, where three such wands serve as a wood frame to support a cooking pot.

The Trunk

The Heartwood

One aspect that stands out is the trunk, which serves as the heartwood of the treehouse. This section anchors the entire structure and provides support to the branches and foliage that make up the rest of the treehouse and is constructed around a Technic frame.

The trunk of the LEGO Treehouse is meticulously designed, with several features that imbue it with a naturalistic feel.

With its sturdy interior lattice pattern and Technic pin attachments to the base, the tree stands tall and strong.

The octagonal pattern of the tree is crafted by building each side separately, ensuring a unique and engaging building experience.

Tiles, plates, and sloped pieces in varied colors are used to create a bark-like texture on each side of the tree.

The aesthetic variety of the build is equally pleasing to the eye. With the houses positioned on their respective branches, the tree appears lush and full-bodied.

This perception changes somewhat when the houses are removed. In terms of proportion, the trunk appears unusually thick with few branches leading up to the canopy, resulting in an anatomically odd configuration.

Thankfully, this is masked effectively by the houses. From the canopy towards the roots, there’s a similar discrepancy.

For a tree of this magnitude, the base lacks sprawling roots for support. This might be slightly off-putting, but it doesn’t diminish the tree’s overall beauty.

In addition to the trunk, branches, canopy, and roots, the designers have incorporated other attractive elements around the tree.

A conspicuous feature is a sawed-off branch, made using a printed piece that has been used sparingly in previous sets, revealing the tree’s interior and age.

Adding further charm is a small birdhouse with a nesting bird, unique to just two sets, its white color contrasting beautifully against the tree’s browns.

The designers have tried to mask the scanty branches and foliage by adding some lower-hanging foliage along the branches supporting the houses.

Here, we also see our first indication of man-made equipment being added to the tree in the form of lanterns; a simple addition that blends well with the surroundings.

The final detail is a chain-link swing attached to one of the tree’s branches, where minifigures can enjoy a gentle swing amidst nature’s beauty.

One suggestion to take the building experience up a notch would be to incorporate it into an imaginative children’s bedroom.

Transforming the room into a forested wonderland with the LEGO Tree House taking center stage can provide hours of imaginative play for children.

For adult fans of Lego, incorporating the set into a home office space or a living room can add a touch of whimsy to the decor.

Tree House

While the tree and its base are filled with intricate details, the true enchantment of this set is embedded in the design of the tree houses.

These houses, with their exceptional design, could easily stand as a striking standalone set. However, when incorporated with the rest of the set, they contribute to the formation of a genuinely extraordinary spectacle.

The tree houses accommodate two bedrooms and a bathroom, providing a perfect living space for a family of four.

A bedroom each for the parents and the children, with balconies and walkways leading from each house, facilitating movement between the houses.

Extra caution has been taken to ensure that each house is reachable from another or the base.

Externally, with the exception of their balconies, most of the houses share a similar construction. The designer, demonstrating a clear preference for octagons, has chosen to give each house this eight-sided form.

Each house’s walls are constructed individually before being joined together to create the overall shape. Although the houses are made of wood, a lighter shade of brown than that of the tree has been chosen by the designer to help differentiate the houses from the branches.

This lighter brown hue stands out prominently against the backdrop of the tree. For additional contrast, detachable roofs, painted in earth blue, are fitted on each house.

These roofs, unlike the rest of the house, have a somewhat monotonous design due to their similar core structure.

However, to offset this, the designers have introduced a colored plate on the inside of each roof.

A view from the top reveals the same colored tile, indicating where each roof should be replaced after removal. This minor but clever addition, while not essential, greatly elevates the appeal of this set.

Master Bedroom

The distinctive features of this segment are the rooms themselves, let’s delve into each one to discover their intricate details.

The initial room constructed is the master bedroom. The room along with the others exemplifies how a minimalist design approach can yield a space that appears both furnished and spacious.

This room boasts an array of trinkets placed on the drawers, such as a brush, compass, mail, flowerpot, binoculars, and two pieces that are quite notable – an ink pad with a quill and a ship encapsulated in a bottle.

The latter is a scarce piece, featured only in two sets. This transparent bottle piece showcases a ship design within it, potentially a nod to the #21313 IDEAS Ship in a Bottle set launched in 2018.

Aside from the aesthetic value, the features in this room are thoughtfully designed. The room comprises a bed that appears cozy despite its modest size.

The bed design even incorporates a space underneath for storing belongings, with a few items already stashed there awaiting your discovery.

One element of the design that particularly stood out was the innovative use of inverted pieces, held together with bar pieces. This design method yields some truly unique shapes.

Bathroom

The next room we construct is the bathroom – a unique addition to LEGO sets. This room features a washbasin, a tub, a shower, a toilet, and storage shelves.

The design techniques employed for the shelves mirror those used in other rooms, but all other appliances boast unique builds.

The washbasin and tub are fairly basic, while the toilet and shower are designed with intriguing detail. The toilet is fully equipped with toilet paper (curiously green), a flush, and water in the bowl.

However, the design of minifigures makes it challenging for them to sit on the toilet without leaning off to one side, a rather impractical position.

The shower is my personal favorite, equipped with temperature controls and an adjustable showerhead, providing an optimal bathing experience for the LEGO minifigures.

The room also features soap and shampoo bottles. The puzzling question of how a bathroom in a tree gets plumbing is addressed by the designer – there’s a water tank at the back of the room that collects rainwater and supplies it to the bathroom sustainably.

Children’s Bedroom

Last, but not least, we have the children’s bedroom. Like the parents’ room, this room is adorned with small items on the shelves and walls.

The bed design, however, differs – instead of a single queen-sized bed, we construct a double-decker bunk bed that even Emmet from the LEGO movie would be proud of.

The bed frame employs oars instead of bars, giving the bed a unique character. The shelves and drawers also use the same innovative upside-down building technique.

This room features three noteworthy decorations: a rose in a glass dome reminiscent of the rose in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, a jar with what appears to be a dragonfly, and a bedtime storybook tucked beside the bed, harking back to the days of bedtime storytelling.

Exterior Details and Walkways

Set Among Canopy: The Sophisticated Structure of the LEGO Ideas Tree House 21318

While each house’s interior is unique, its exteriors share common features, including the balconies we mentioned before.

Each balcony hosts interactive furniture, like a telescope and a pulley system, which both LEGO minifigures and users can engage with.

To enhance the rustic feel of the tree house cabins, the designers chose various shades of brown along with printed planks.

Through the use of printed tiles, cylindrical pieces, plates, and arches, the treehouse gives off a handcrafted feel.

The houses are surrounded by the balconies and pathways discussed earlier. Despite appearing hazardous, they are wide enough for a Minifigure, allowing for a range of poses.

One of the simplest yet interesting exterior features is the lanterns that utilize the LEGO Marvel Black Panther Minifigure headpiece to add texture.

In addition to the houses and the tree, we also construct a wobbly bridge and a wooden staircase, which connect the houses and the base to the upper level.

The bridge achieves its natural flow by having each rung built separately and connected via a ball and socket joint.

The stairs, though they appear complex, are fairly simple. The stair design uses a standard LEGO staircase piece and modifies it slightly to align with the other stairs.

To achieve a curved effect, each level is built separately and connected using clips along a rod. The staircase lacks railings at the top, so let’s hope the adventurous kids tread carefully.

Growing up, I always wanted to experience playing in a treehouse with my friends like what I saw on TV shows; however, living in an urban environment left me with little opportunity to do so.

But now, thanks to LEGO Ideas Tree House 21318’s rickety bridge and wooden staircase, I am given an immersive play experience as well as nostalgic moments from my childhood dreams come true!

The Seasons And Foliage

The set’s interchangeable leaves are one of its standout features. Just over 6% of the total pieces in this set are dedicated to the leaves alone.

The set offers four different colors for the leaves, allowing builders to create foliage representative of the summer or fall season.

With some ingenuity and additional pieces from an online LEGO store like Bricklink or directly from LEGO, you could even add the final two missing seasons.

Building this section can become repetitive due to the number of identical branches, but the designer has tried to diversify the building experience for each color change.

The fall colors contrast vividly with the forest floor, while the summer colors pop against the trees and treehouse.

I personally prefer to switch the foliage colors according to the seasons, creating a continually fresh and unique display piece.

Even though the repetition can be a bit tedious, the color variety compensates for this, making the building process therapeutic for some.

The repetition can’t be held too strongly against this set, as there wasn’t much else the designer could have done to vary this aspect.

This adaptability to seasons imparts a realistic touch to the model, immersing builders into a dynamic, ever-changing world.

Moreover, LEGO’s commitment to sustainable play experiences is underscored in this model as the green and yellow leaf elements are made from plant-based plastic, derived from sustainably sourced sugarcane.

Minifigures

Despite its considerable size, the treehouse set houses a mere quartet of minifigures. However, these figures are impeccably tailored to the setting, portraying a family embarking on an adventurous holiday or perhaps even residing in the treehouse.

The set encompasses two adult figures, presumably parents, alongside two child figures, a boy and a girl. None of the figures are exclusive to this set, but it’s worth noting that a few have only graced five or fewer sets to date.

Among the array of figures, a single figure is granted the feature of dual faces. Initially, this could be deemed as underwhelming, but upon closer inspection of the intricately printed torsos, one appreciates that the creative resources were diverted elsewhere to enhance other aspects of the set.
